How to Interpret Your Dreams
The ‘I AM’ and ‘I NEED’ formula - Part II

This month I want to show you in detail how to use the I AM and I NEED formula I described in my July 09, 2000 column (Click here to review). To do this I'm taking a dream submitted by a reader. The first time through the dream we just try to determine the subject matter without interpreting the rest of it.

THE FAKE OCEAN
I was back in the science room at the middle school in my home town. My teacher, Mrs. Clark was there saying something. Then I looked at the back half of the science room and it was just a huge opening to the ocean. The waves were very dark blue and white on top, but in a strange way they looked two-dimensional, like the waves used in sets for plays. The sun was burning behind the water, but it looked fake, too. I went out into the sand. There was a huge sandcastle taller then me. Someone pushed me and I fell into it.

The subject matter is given by three things; the ocean, the beach (sand) and the sun. These give Spiritual Healing as the subject matter (refer to my dictionary here). Now that we know what the dream is addressing we go through it again marking the positive and negative keywords and phrases. I'll do this by marking negative phrases in red and positive phrases in green.

THE FAKE OCEAN

Then I looked at the back half of the science room and it was just a huge opening to the ocean. The waves were very dark blue and white on top, but in a strange way they looked two-dimensional, like the waves used in sets for plays. The sun was burning behind the water, but it looked fake, too. I went out into the sand. There was a huge sandcastle taller then me. Someone pushed me and I fell into it.

I have not marked all the phrases but we can still see the dream taking structure. Here’s a list of the negative phrases from the dream. We place these under a column entitled I AM.

  • Strange
  • Two dimensional
  • Fake

To interpret these we construct the sentence

When it comes to spiritual healing I AM phrase

With minor changes we get the sentences

  • When it comes to spiritual healing I see it as strange
  • When it comes to spiritual healing I see it as not part of reality (two dimensional).
  • When it comes to spiritual healing I see it as fake.

OK so now we know how the dreamer feels about spiritual healing. Now let’s look at the positive phrases. We put these under a column entitled I NEED / MY POTENTIAL.

  • Teacher
  • Huge opening
  • Someone pushed me
  • I fell into it

To interpret these we construct the sentence

When it comes to spiritual healing I NEED or MY POTENTIAL phrase

They interpret as follows.

  • When it comes to spiritual healing my potential is to be a teacher.
  • When it comes to spiritual healing I need to create an opening for it.
  • When it comes to spiritual healing I need someone to give me a push.
  • When it comes to spiritual healing I will fall into it.

So now we have it. The dreamer has the potential to teach spiritual healing but right now she sees spiritual healing as fake. She needs to create an opening for this and will find that once pushed, she’ll fall into it.

Naturally there is plenty more left in the dream that I didn’t touch on here. My objective was to show you the simplicity of the formula in operation so that you can try it on your own. Enjoy!
