Comment:

 One concern presently have is my work. I've done the same type of work for almost 20 years and have found it very satisfying until the last year or so. In the job I have now, my work just doesn't seem like fun anymore. It has the potential to get better, but things are likely to get worse before they get better. I also feel conflict about wanting to stay late and put extra hours in, but not wanting to disappoint my spouse by not being at home.

Dream: The Fish

I'm in a cafeteria (a common beginning in my dreams). I get a plate with mashed potatoes, broccoli, and a piece of fish. I realize that the fish is whole, complete with head and fins. I take it outside into the sunlight. The fish is alive -- it starts to squirm and try to get away from me. I'm walking around carrying this fish -- at one point I look into its face. It doesn't seem to be distressed by being out of water. Its face has become quite expressive. However, I'm still determined to eat the fish. I come to a campground that has an outdoor workbench with a sink for cleaning fish. I try to kill the fish with a knife. But, instead of cutting its head off, I cut it in half. The half with the head keeps squirming and trying to get away from me.

After I awoke, I wondered why I didn't put the fish in some water when I realized that it was alive.

 


Interpretation

Bold words: the words from your dream.

At first glance you would assume your dream is about the digestive system but it is not. Tucked away on my pages about spiritual gifts you will see that serving food or drink represents the gift of spiritual healing. So the dream is then about your ability to heal others with your hands. Everything else in the dream will be referring to this. A fish becomes the feature of the dream. A fish lives in water and water represents spirituality. Rule 1 of interpretation is that you are everything in the dream so you are the fish. At the start of the dream you only see a piece of fish. So this is saying that you are not whole or complete. Something is missing but you don't know what - this is why you had the dream.

So we find you are being told to realize your gift of healing (cafeteria) to make you whole and complete. You take the fish out into the sunlight. The sun is another symbol for this gift and the light refers to spirituality again and working for the light. So here you are being told with regard to your gift to take it outside or in other words use the gift. Don't keep it hidden within you. Let this part of you that you are walking around carrying become alive. The fish squirming trying to get away from you indicates your reluctance and the fact that you are avoiding using your gift. You are showing signs of stress (distress) and the reason is by not expressing your spiritual nature enough (being out of water).

The rest of the dream indicates anger at this part of your nature. It's like you know you have it but are trying to cut it off. You are again being told to work with this gift (outdoor work bench) and we see this bench has a sink for cleaning. This indicates that you could have a problem with your kidneys or bladder. Disorders in this area are linked to denial of spiritual gifts.

When you woke you knew what you should have done. Symbolically putting the fish into water would be you accepting you gift. In these cases you can relax again and try to get back into the dream. Then instead of killing the fish find yourself putting it into the water.

Since you say you're not happy with your line of work perhaps you'll explore this part of your nature.

Dreamer's Comment on the Interpretation

I have been feeling rather spiritually starved lately. So the part about the fish representing spirituality and not seeming whole seems to fit. I don't feel that I have any particular gift for healing -- especially with my hands. However, I have been wishing that I could do something creative or artistic with my hands -- I love working with fibers, yarn, etc. but don't have much time to do it.
